SHAREPOINT VACATION CALENDAR AND SUPPORT SERVICES
THE ORGANIZATION
Langford is a progressive municipality that has fully embraced the Microsoft toolset, and in particular SharePoint, to improve communication and collaboration across their many staff and locations. Langford is busy and booming. In their words “Langford projected an increase in its population by 123% over 25 years starting in 2001…” (from www.cityoflangford.ca)
THE CHALLENGE
The Langford application support engineers are very capable, but also very busy so when the need for a centralized Vacation Calendar arose, and they saw what Lightlever had done for others, they contracted Gerry to build it.
THE APPROACH
Working remotely, Gerry connected to the Langford HR Portal and created a Vacation Calendar using standard SharePoint tools: a Calendar List with custom metadata and custom views, InfoPath forms, and a SharePoint Designer Workflow to send approval emails and update calendar entries. This solutions has, according to IT Manager Steve Stinson, “provided a consistent, centralized interface for all City Staff”. After the initial rollout and in use for 12 months, some additional features were identified. These were implemented quickly and easily by Lightlever, thus confirming that we met our goal of keeping it simple and maintainable.
